After awakening from a mysterious accident, Herbie Caxton is thrust into the strange town of Herzeleid, a self-sufficient island somewhere in Lake Michigan. But something doesn't seem right in this peaceful town. What is the darkness that lies within the horse farm?
The Horse Farm A Short Story eBook Derrick Heisey
Part Alice in Wonderland, part ghost story, and more than a dash of plain old weirdness, this short story was...interesting.A man wakes up after an accident not remembering who he is or what happened. He remembers that he is on Herzeleid, an island off the coast of Wisconsin.
He believes he is a music composer named Herbie. He meets several people who behave strangely. There is also a talking horse. This horse pours him tea and asks him to autograph a CD.
Trying to figure out what everything means is challenging.
Herzeleid is German for "heartbreak". Does that mean anything, or is it just a (very large) coincidence?
Is the horse standing in for the girl with long blonde hair and a black dress? No, that can't be right because the horse shows up later wearing a blue tuxedo and a monocle.
What does a "laugh that is not a laugh, though; which sounds like a horrible mocking whinny, burned at the edges, and smelling of blood" sound like?
When the doctor is "glancing at the nightstand with a glimmer of hope", does it mean he is looking for a sign that the man seeks redemption?
So the HORSE is the murderer setting up the guy... um no, the horse must be his alter ego- doing horrific things that the guy can't admit to.
And then again, I need to remember that sometimes a pine tree really IS just a pine tree....
This author can write and definitely has the imagination for it. But when the story starts sounding less like a mystery and more like an unpleasant acid trip then the audience is lost, and while the author knows what's in his head, he needs to be aware that others don't.

The Horse Farm A Short Story eBook Derrick Heisey Reviews
This is a story that reels you in and does not let go until it shoves you away and leaves you staggering. The setting is a picturesque town with a little too much perfection in the air, setting you on edge as you follow the short and eerie story of Herbie Caxton. An excellent read for those interested in the bizarre and unusual.
This was a quick read, as the way it is written grabs the reader with detail. It keeps the reader as confused as the main character is, and has a great ending.
This was a good story. I'm still not sure why they kept telling the main character that he killed a horse. Ah, well. I will say that I saw the ending coming a mile away. Yet, it was still a darn fine story. I'll be looking for more from this author.
I realize that the author's forte is writing bizzare stories but the suppose to be thriller becomes a silly comedy. It borders on the ridiculous. I don't like to give negative comments but after I went back and reread some of it several weeks later, I had to. The ending had me going "What"?!
