Hirsch was just out of college when he landed his dream job photographing life along the Mississippi River for the Telegraph-Herald in Dubuque, Iowa. He loved his job and moved steadily up through the ranks. He thought he would retire there but after 19 years, Hirsch was let go. It felt like he had been hit by a truck but Hirsch managed to build a freelance career. Then in 2011, he was literally hit by a truck and almost killed. After the crash Hirsch was unable to work. Then Hirsch bought his first iPhone. One day, on his way home in the middle of a January snow storm, Hirsch took his first picture with the iPhone and was instantly hooked! Something about That Tree caught Hirsch's eye that day, he's not sure why. He'd driven past That Tree nearly every day for 19 years but never really looked at it. Hirsch decided to make a photo of That Tree every day for a year. Before sunrise, after sunset, anytime really, he was there waiting and watching, taking note of the simple beauty he had missed for so long. A nest of eggs beneath her branches, a darting blackbird, the sun setting on the horizon beyond That Tree. The valley of That Tree became for Hirsch a foreign land full of strange and wonderful discoveries. That Tree had spoken to Hirsch of patience and dedication. It gave him healing and inspiration and it taught him to slow down, take time to look around and appreciate the almost, but not quite, hidden beauty that abounds in our world. Sometimes even in your own backyard.

I am here to buy the book... but I already know that it's great. I've been following That Tree on Facebook for months, and the daily images are incredible. Who knew that there could be so many ways to look at a single tree, so much change around it... that life itself could play out in its atmosphere. Hope there are plenty available because I want to give some as Christmas presents!!EDIT: The book is gorgeous!! Mine arrived slightly damaged because of mishandling during shipping, but it's being replaced. I will be donating the damaged one to a Children's Hospital, at the seller's request. Happy people all around!

Amazing how Mark kept at it for 365 days and to actually not only be there in all kinds of weather conditions but to bring the viewer into a relationship with this/his, That Tree, that will certainly have you seeing trees differently. This has to be one of the most beautiful books that I've ever seen and to think the photos were done w/ the camera on his phone! And to follow that tree for a year is a joy and to see its changes. Awesome. I continually gift friends w/ this delightfully beautiful gift.
I would have preferred a soft cover version that would be easier to hold and a less glitzy choice of paper so that the subtlety of the photos
could be appreciated, but I bought the book because I thought it was such a splendid idea to photograph the same tree every day for a year
through all the seasons. Thank you, Mark Hirsch!
Great study. As a photographer, I do find a few photos that I wish had been taken with a better lens. But knowing how difficult it can be to lug around the equipment, I am glad he had his i-phone handy to take these. I am very thankful Mark chose to share them by publishing this book.
We first saw this at a friend's home and liked it enough to get our own copy. The photography and layout are fabulous, the price was very reasonable for this (high) quality of publication and a signed copy. We are more than pleased!
